Scientists celebrate in the scientific mission observation centre of the French space agency Centre National d'Etudes Spatiales (CNES) in Toulouse, southern France, on November 12, 2014, as they receive information that the European Space Agency's (ESA) robot craft Philae has landed on the Churyumov-Gerasimenko comet after a 20-kilometre (12-mile) descent from its carrier the European space probe Rosetta, following a ten year journey. The European probe Philae has made the first-ever landing on a comet, a crowning phase in a quest to explore the origins of the Solar System, the European Space Agency (ESA) said on November 12. The image was taken with the landers CIVA-P imaging system and captures almost all of the full length of one of the orbiter's 14 metre-long solar wings. It was stored onboard the lander until the radio link was established with Rosetta around two hours after separation, and then relayed to Earth. The lander separated from the orbiter at 09:03 GMT/10:03 CET and is expected to touch down on Comet 67P/ChuryumovGerasimenko seven hours later. Confirmation of a successful touchdown is expected in a one-hour window centred on 16:02 GMT / 17:02 CET. Rosetta and Philae had been riding through space together for more than 10 years. While Philae is set to become the first probe to land on a comet, Rosetta is already the first to rendezvous with a comet and follow it around the Sun.
